Birkby Lodge Dining Club hosts a unique music festival in its private back garden in aid of established Huddersfield charity, the Welcome Centre. £20 per ticket includes local bands, Manchester DJ and a hot supper – what an amazing price – only 200 tickets available and must be bought in advance available until mid June, all drinks to be bought at the festival bars on the night – email mithuk@btinternet.com for tickets

“Having won a meal for two at the recent(ish) WI Pub quiz my husband and I spent an enjoyable evening at Birkby Lodge Dining Club.

It was a special experience, having never been to an underground restaurant before. Mithu, our host, has clearly put a lot of thought into making the experience as relaxing as possible. You soon forget any shyness of being in someone’s home.

Each month Mithu’s menus are themed. We attended The Best of British. To start we both chose the Black Pudding with Sweet Chilli Jam which was elegant and yet
simply presented, it was beautiful.

We didn’t feel rushed between courses, so it was a nice relaxing atmosphere for conversation.

For our main course we had Beef in Ale with mushrooms and baby onions. This was a substantial serving with a good amount of seasonal veg on a platter at the side. I suspect no one has ever left Mithu hungry and we are both good eaters.

The Vegetarian option of Leek, potato and spinach bake with Cheshire Cheese crumble topping did look lovely and seemed to go down well on the table opposite.
As for the most important course of the evening my husband had the Chocolate Trifle, which looked very rich (I wouldn’t know he wouldn’t share and scraped the glass clean) and I had the bread and butter pudding with a very generous serving of clotted cream, which is my favourite.

The food was wonderful and is very good value and you couldn’t ask for a better host. We will be returning this summer, with friends.
